Hima
Cement : In April 1999, Bamburi Cement acquired a significant
stake in Hima Cement Ltd., which has a factory in Kasese, Western
Uganda. The plant currently has a capacity of 240,000 tonnes. Hima
has significantly improved Bamburis market presence in Uganda,
and will provide leverage into the Great Lakes region in the future.
Bamburi
Special Products Ltd. (BSP) in Nairobi, a wholly owned subsidiary,
manufactures paving blocks under the brand name "BamburiBlox".
The paver-block business is opening up significantly as people become
aware of the affordability and longevity of the product, and BSP
has sold significant volumes to road rehabilitation projects.
BSP branched out into garden landscaping products, such as cobbles
and slate. Development of new products is ongoing, and BSP will
continue to provide Bamburi Cement with a platform for potential
further expansion into cement related added value businesses.
Lafarge Ecosystems was originally established as a department of Bamburi Cement (called Baobab Farm Ltd) and was incorporated as a company on it's own in 1977.
