Bamburi ends restructuring of subsidiary

Bamburi Cement has finalized restructuring its Mombasa-based subsidiary, Baobab Farm.

The subsidiary will now revert to its originally envisaged core activities including quarry rehabilitation, ecosystem management and environmental protection.
An official of the cement maker said the decision to restructure the subsidiary was made after consultation with staff and the relevant employee welfare bodies.

According to Bamburi’s Human Resource a\and Organisation Director, Epimach Maritim, the decision to refocus Baobab Farm on its initial core business aims at putting a lid on rising costs. It has forced the company to downscale its activities as well as render a number of jobs redundant.

Established in 1966 to reclaim mined land, Baobab Farm gradually broadened its activities to non-core commercial activities including fish and crocodile farming, poultry keeping and ranching.

Maritime said the changes that will include disposal of some or the firm’s non-strategic assets such as housing, is part of ongoing programme to re-focus the Bomber group on its core business.
