Njiru in fine form as he plays clean

Former Africa champion Peter Njiru from Windsor Golf and Country Club, was in fine form yesterday, as he played a clean first nine of three under par 33, which he followed with two under par 33 at the back nine, for a magnificent five under par 66, to jump to the top of the leaderboard at the close of the 2003 Bamburi Cement Golf Challenge at Nyali Golf and Country Club.

Njiru, who started yesterday’s round in joint fifth with nine over par 151, shot off with an eagle three at the opening par five-first, birdied the fourth, for his 33 in the outward nine, then he bogeyed the 10th, but picked up birdies at the 12th, 13th and 14th for two under par 33 and a total of four over par 217.

Njiru who is also the Pirelli Diani Beach Masters champion, starts today’s final round, two shots clear ahead of Royal Nairobi’s Anil Shah who fired one over par 72, for a total of 219. his 72 included four birdies and five bogeys, while behind Shah, was Ajay Shah who is attached to the Great Rift Valley Golf and Resort Club of Naivasha who like Anil Shah, fired one over par 72 for a total of 220. In fourth place is Jacob Okello who shot three over par 74 for 221.

Round one leader Dismas Indiza slipped back to a joint fifth on 224 after a 77 in the third round where he tied with Fred Kamau, and Tanzania’s Salim Mwanyenza. Kamau shot 76 and Mwanyenza 75.

The pros will be off at 7:30 in today’s fourth round which will be the main event for the amateurs who will be joined by guests of Bamburi Cement company who have sponsored the event for the past 30 years. A total of Sh350,000 is at stake this year for the pros, while besides the trophy, the amateurs will also be playing for a total of 13 prizes.
